Cross-Stitch 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started

June 21, 2025

Welcome to the calming, creative world of cross-stitch! Whether you're looking for a new hobby, a mindful way to unwind, or a nostalgic return to something your grandma used to do, you're in the right place. Cross-stitching is simple to learn, endlessly customizable, and perfect for makers of all skill levels.

At Nook & Needle, we believe anyone can stitch—and we’re here to help you get started with confidence.

What You’ll Need: Basic Cross-Stitch Supplies

Before you thread your needle, let’s gather the essentials:

  • Embroidery hoop – Keeps your fabric taut and easier to work with.

  • Aida cloth (14-count is beginner-friendly) – The most common fabric for cross-stitch, with a grid-like weave that’s easy to count.

  • Embroidery floss – Cotton thread, typically DMC brand. You’ll usually separate strands depending on your pattern.

  • Embroidery needle – Look for blunt-tip tapestry needles in size 24 or 26.

  • Scissors – Small, sharp embroidery scissors will make your life easier.

  • A pattern or kit – Start with a beginner kit (like those in our shop!) that includes everything in one package.

Understanding the Basics

Cross-stitch is made up of tiny X-shaped stitches that follow a counted pattern. Think of it like pixel art, but on fabric.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Start at the center of your fabric and pattern to ensure it’s centered.

  2. Thread your needle with 2 strands of floss.

  3. Make a diagonal stitch ( / ), then cross it in the opposite direction ( \ ) to form an X.

  4. Repeat following the chart—one square on the pattern = one stitch on the fabric.

Pro Tips for First-Time Stitchers

  • Wash your hands before stitching—oils from skin can discolor your fabric.

  • Avoid knots—secure threads by weaving them under previous stitches on the back.

  • Use a needle minder or magnetic board to keep your tools organized.

  • Take breaks—cross-stitch is relaxing, not a race.

  • Embrace imperfection—every stitcher makes mistakes. Your piece is still beautiful.
